Hospital bag checklist: what to pack for labour and birth

There’s no perfect packing list, and every maternity unit is a little different. This one covers the things most parents are glad they brought. Aim to have your bag ready by around 36 weeks, in case your baby arrives early, and check whether your hospital or birth centre shares its own list.

Important things

For you during labour

For you afterwards

For your baby

For your birth partner

Leave at home: jewellery and other valuables.

A few reassuring things

Pack less than you think you need. Some people are home within hours of their baby being born, and others stay longer, so keep the bag simple and let your partner bring extras later if needed. If you’d like more on what to expect from labour and birth, our early pregnancy guide covers the first weeks, and our classes cover the rest.

Our small-group classes in Ringwood are led by an NHS GP who is also a mum, and they’re £150 for you and your birth partner.

Baby Steps GP provides antenatal education. This checklist is general information, not medical advice. Your hospital or birth centre’s own guidance always comes first. Last updated October 2026.
